Java Information

Java might not be the biggest island in Indonesia, but occupies a central place geographically, culturally, and politically. It is divided into 6 provinces. 60% of all Indonesian live in Java. It has ancient monuments, stunning natural beauty, and 2 big polluted metropolises.

The capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta, is in the north-west of the island. From every corner of the archipelago, they all come to Jakarta to make their fortune. It is the melting pot of Indonesia. Most travelers avoid it like the plague. It is a pity because Jakarta does have its own charms and a good jump off spot for Bogor, Puncak, and even Krakatau. You will find a hot–polluted-chaotic city of 15 million people. You will still have to deal with Jakarta at some point of the journey, so here are its best bits.

Kota, is the old quarter of Jakarta. The buildings were constructed during the Dutch occupation era, and some of them are now museums. Fatahilla Square boast three museums and one can always enjoy an elegant meal at the café Batavia. Jalan Surabaya in Menteng has an antique street market. Nightlife is loud and wild at Kemang, Kuningan, and Thamrin. For a walk on the wild side, most foreigners head to Blok M, in South Jakarta. It rivals Patpong (Bangkok) for number of girls per square meter.

Leaving Jakarta, and heading south one reaches Pelabuhan Ratu in West Java. Pangandaran is another lovely beach resort often ignored by tourists. Go to Pangandaran if you are not going as far as Bali. They have spectacular sun rises and sun sets. Bandung was the colonial retreat when things got too hot and muggy in Jakarta. It is the shopping fashion capital and a showcase of Sundanese culture. Cirebon has two great palaces and sumptuous Batik.
