Jepara is famed for its intricate carved teakwood furniture and wall panels. Numerous shops compete for business in Tahunan and the freightfowarders make sending your new dining set home a breeze. Its most famous resident is Ibu Kartini. Kartini lived in the 19th Century and played a pivotal role in fighting for education for women. Kartini Day is still celebrated throughout Indonesia. Jepara has white sand beaches in Pantai Bandengan and are amongst the best beaches on Java’s North Coast. Pulau Karimunjawa is fast becoming the new hip beach destination with glorious deserted beaches, vibrant reefs, and a Robinson Crusoe feel about them. Karimunjawa is an archipelago of 27 islands approximately 80 kilometres northwest of Jepara. They are off the North Coast of Java island and can also be reached by public ferry from Semarang. Twenty-two islands have been declared in 2001 as a marine national park called Karimunjawa National Park. Five of the islands islands are privately owned or are under the control of the Indonesian Navy. The islands have fabulous and extensive coral reefs; a mixture of fringing and patchy reefs. There are a number of dive sites and one upmarket dive resort.
