Semarang is two very different cities. The Old Dutch colonial area retains much of its old world charm with colonial churches, canals, Chinatown and an Arab Quarter. Atmospheric elegant restaurants and cafes are found along Jalan Pemuda.

This contrasts with the bustle of Simpang Lima that houses the usual malls, cineplexes and everything modern in Indonesia.

Gedung Batu or Sam Po Kong Temple is a noteworthy Chinese temple built in honour of Admiral Cheng Ho in the 15th Century.

Semarang is also famous for its Jamu or herbal drinks. You can tour the factories at Jamu Nonya Meneer and Jamu Jago.

Most visitors breeze through Semarang on the way to Jogja or Surabaya.
