Papua Information
Raja Ampat is an archipelago of over 1,500 small islands, surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo. Raja Ampat is massive, with an area of more than 40,000 km² of land and sea, including Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia.
The bio diversity in Raja Ampat is the highest recorded on Earth. Popular diving spots include the Dampier Strait (between Waigeo Island and Batanta ), Kofiau Islands, South East Misool and Wayag Islands.
Marine life include the Pigmy seahorses, wobbegong sharks and manta rays. Manta point is located in Arborek near Dampier straits. Dugongs are routinely sighted in Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo.
The most convenient flights connect you from Jakarta to Sorong (6 hours). Lion Air and Merpati serve Sorong from Jakarta and Manado. A fast ferry will then connect you from Sorong to Waigeo Island. Most divers are booked on relatively expensive all- inclusive dive holidays and are transferred directly from their hotel in Sorong.
The combination of remoteness, high costs and sheer size, has kept Raja Ampat pristine and untouched.
